As anticipated, after a few extra weeks of delays, Apple has officially introduced the first ever 5G-capable iPhones with the announcement of the iPhone 12 lineup. Each of the four brand-new phones will be ready to take speeds to the next generation, and Apple went as far as bringing out the CEO of Verizon to tout the speed capabilities.
The Default: iPhone 12
Last year’s iPhone 11 has been the best-selling iPhone over the past year, and Apple likely intends for the iPhone 12 to become the new default iPhone. The new flat edges on the exterior are similar to the iPad Pro, giving the lineup a fresh new look. It has the same 6.1-inch display size, but gets a massive upgrade in display quality moving from LCD to Apple’s Super Retina XDR Display, aka OLED. The glass on the display is now more durable than ever with Ceramic Shield, claiming it to be tougher than any other smartphone, but we’ll leave that determination up to YouTuber JerryRigEverything. Underneath the glass, you’ll find the new A14 Bionic chip, which was announced last month in the iPad Air. It brings more cores and provides faster performance in CPU and GPU. The camera system remains a dual camera system with improved low-light performance and night mode to the ultra-wide camera. The iPhone 12 starts at $799 and will be available for preorder on Friday, October 16 and in stores on October 23.
The Mini, Pocket-Friendly iPhone
Fans of small phones can finally rejoice. Apple is calling the iPhone 12 Mini the smallest and lightest 5G phone in the world. At 5.4-inches the iPhone 12 Mini packs in all of the same features as the iPhone 12 in a significantly more pocketable size. As phones have continued to get larger, the Mini is a breath of fresh air. The iPhone 12 Mini starts at $699 and will be available for preorder on November 6 and in stores on November 13.
iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max
The Pro users get exciting upgrades as well, primarily on the cameras. At 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch respectively, the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are slightly larger than last year’s Pro models and the Max is the largest iPhone display ever. The camera upgrades include the ability to shoot photos in Apple ProRAW and recording video in 10-bit HDR and Dolby Vision at 4K 60fps. New LiDAR sensors also bring improved autofocus to the Pro models, particularly in low light. The 12 Pro Max gets a camera sensor upgrade that the smaller Pro model doesn’t, which makes for even more impressive low-light capabilities. The 12 Pro starts at $999 and is available for preorder on Friday, October 16 and in stores on October 23. The 12 Pro Max starts at $1,099 and is available for preorder on November 6 and in stores on November 13.
Plus the HomePod Mini
One tiny other detail announced today was the addition of a HomePod Mini. With a similar appearance, but smaller design, the HomePod Mini fits right in with the original HomePod. It is designed to incorporate amazing sound with the smart assistant capabilities of Siri. It will compete with Amazon devices, but includes the privacy and security that you’ve come to expect from Apple. It is available for preorder November 6 for $99.
