The Subaru WRX Hatchback is on its way, and 2020 is expected to be a unique year for the auto industry.

Into the New Generation

The newest Subaru WRX generation will likely divert from the model’s previous design. Rather than packing a flat-four gasoline engine, the 2020 edition will feature all-wheel drive. We’ve gotten a close look at the Subaru’s VIZIV Performance Concept, which was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. During the event, the WRX’s newest options were revealed.

If the rumors are true, Subaru’s Design Chief, Mamoru Ishii, the WRX will be a lot sleeker than the 2013 WRX concept. The concept was smooth, of course, utilizing coupe-like body lines. The newest concepts, however, divert from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution look—which was popular at the time.

A New Drivetrain

Styling isn’t the only change, either. The new WRX is expected to divert from its typical drivetrain, too. Allegedly, Subaru is considering hybrid power as an energy source. Hybrids, when tuned for performance, offer a good amount of low-end torque. Low-end torque, itself, has been a criticism of the Subaru FA20 engine. Because the next WRX will use Subaru’s Global Platform, it will be easy to attach hybrid hardware to the vehicle’s pre-existing architecture.

As it stands, the new WRX is expected to be more performance-minded. Four-wheel drive is important to both performance and power, but Subaru intends to focus more on “engine freedom.” Several rumors suggest that another engine—other than the traditional flat-four, of course—may be another option down the road.

Other Big Changes

Many of the WRX’s stylistic upgrades are in the works, but it’s safe to assume we’ll see the hood scoop and wheel arches which make up Subaru’s DNA. Technically speaking, the WRX may be controversial. While familiar features may make the cut, electrification may deviate too much from typical engine layouts to be appreciated by drivers.

We’re excited for the 2020 Subaru WRX, and we feel Subaru’s changes are a much-needed evolution within the industry. Keep your eyes peeled for new WRX news, and check back on Subaru’s updates as the new WRX evolves.
