A First Look at the Samsung Galaxy S21 Lineup

Get a first look at the newly announced Samsung Galaxy S21 lineup, including the Galaxy S21 Plus and S21 Ultra.
Galaxy S21

Samsung officially released its newest lineup of flagship smartphones today at their annual Galaxy Unpacked event. The smartphones have a fresh new design with a much less offensive camera bump than previous models. The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra range in price from $799, $999 and $1,199 respectively and will be available starting on January 29, 2021.

A More Affordable Flagship Smartphone

For the first time in years, Samsung has actually lowered prices on the Galaxy S21 and S21+. The decrease in price does come with a few expected compromises, but plenty of improvements that make these smartphones an exceptional value. Gone are the familiar curved glass displays that Samsung is known for. The 6.2-inch and 6.7-inch displays have flat-panel glass with a slightly lower resolution than last year’s S20. Don’t worry, at 3200 x 1440 with a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, you’ll hardly notice. The S21 comes with 8GB of RAM, a 4,000 mAh battery and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 888 processor. The S21+ also comes with 8GB of RAM, a bigger 4,800 mAh battery and the Snapdragon 888 processor.

Galaxy S21 Ultra

If those specs aren’t enough for you, Samsung has the solution. The S21 Ultra comes packed with a 6.8-inch OLED display with a 3200 x 1440 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, 12GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor. It also includes a massive 5,000 mAh battery. All this starts for $1,199 but doesn’t include the S Pen or a charging brick. Those are things you’ll have to pay extra for, as well as a case that can house the S Pen.

Camera Improvements

The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ offer a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 64-megapixel telephoto lens, which is identical to last year’s S20 lineup. The improvements here come with computational photography with improvements on digital zoom and a director’s view for shooting video. The Ultra offers a 12-megapixel ultrawide, two 10-megapixel telephoto cameras (one with 3x zoom and one with 10x zoom) and an upgraded 108-megapixel sensor. All this should result in much sharper images with better dynamic range.
