Apple Introduces Improved 13-Inch MacBook Pro
Apple’s trend of small, but practical upgrades continued as they officially announced the new 13-inch MacBook Pro on May 4, 2020. It’s an announcement that Apple fans have been expecting since the release of the 16-inch MacBook Pro in November of 2019.
The End of the Butterfly Keyboard
The biggest news with the release of this MacBook is the official end of the much-maligned butterfly keyboard. The new Magic Keyboard is enough of a reason alone for Apple to release an upgraded 13-inch MacBook Pro. We can’t fault Apple for trying to innovate with the butterfly keyboard, but the failed experiment took a few too many years to fix.
A Powerful and Portable MacBook Pro
Apple essentially released two different versions of the laptop, one with an 8th generation Intel Core i5 processor, and one with a 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor. While the base model of the new 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,299, it lacks the processing power that comes with the more expensive version. The more powerful machine starts at $1,799, and along with the updated processor it comes with double the storage (512GB SSD), double the RAM (16GB 3733MHz LPDDR4X memory and double the available Thunderbolt 3 ports (four vs. two).
The pricing puts the new 13-inch MacBook Pro in a precarious position in the Apple lineup. The base model competes with the all-new MacBook Air that has newer processors, while the upgraded model rapidly approaches the price of the much more capable 16-inch MacBook Pro. That being said, the specs are certainly enough to get most jobs done quite quickly, and the lightweight portability of the 13-inch makes it an incredible laptop.
