Never Lose Your Keys Again
We’ve all been there. Frantically searching for your keys when you’re already running late for work. Apple hopes to make that search considerably less frantic with a new product called AirTag that can be attached to your everyday items to keep track of them. While products like Tile have been around since 2015, Apple’s AirTags will likely work seamlessly within the Apple ecosystem without the need to download any additional software.
How Would AirTag Work?
The AirTag would be a small tile with Bluetooth connectivity that would be used to find and track missing items like your keys or wallet. When you inevitably lose your keys, or if you leave them behind somewhere, you’ll get a notification on your iPhone. First it will show you a location of where you left your item, then you can then choose to have the AirTag chime loudly so you can identify exactly where you left it.
Most Bluetooth tracking devices that have been on the market are only okay at finding the exact location of items. Apple’s AirTags are expected to utilize the U1 ultra-wideband chip that can be found in the newest iPhones to offer more precise tracking than any of the competitors on the market. The trackers will need to be charged periodically and are rumored to have magnetic charging like the Apple Watch. They are expected to be fully waterproof, so if your keys go overboard, you still might have a chance at finding them.
The cost and release date of AirTags is still unknown, but predictions from insiders at Apple point towards a release towards the end of 2020 which would likely mean an announcement alongside the upcoming iPhone 12. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about what’s coming next from Apple.
