iPhone XR Pre-Orders Go Live
On Friday, October 19, iPhone XR orders hit the Apple Store and other big box retailers. The pre-order still places a week’s wait before the device will be in consumers’ hands. Launched alongside the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, the iPhone XR is being considered Apple’s budget phone. Feel free to scoff at that assumption, given the device starts at $749. However, the iPhone XR is a formidable device, with internals rivaling the much more expensive alternate models.
The broad six color choice is the most striking and outward difference between the iPhone XR and iPhone XS. As shown in MKBHD’s video above, the colors seem to really pop. This is certainly thanks to the fancy lighting detail Apple installed for their hands-on show room at Steve Jobs Theater. However, it is the first color range this deep since the iPhone 5c came out as another less expensive alternative to the iPhone 5s.
White, Black, Blue, Yellow, Coral, and (PRODUCT)RED provide the opportunity to really stand out from the crowd, especially if you carry the iPhone XR without a case. Like the iPhone 8, 7, 6s, and 6 before it, iPhone XR includes a rounded aluminum band around the edges with antenna breaks as needed. Similar to the iPhone 8, X, and XS, the device includes a glass back for wireless charging. But that is not the only similarity to the more expensive iPhone XS models.
How Does it Compare?
Strikingly, iPhone XR boasts almost the same hardware as the other new devices. You can see a head to head comparison on Apple’s website, but here are some of the major similarities:
- 12MP camera (although, single lens)
- 7MP TrueDepth camera
- Apple’s new Face ID
- A12 Bionic chipset
- 64GB entry storage capacity
- True Tone display
- Wide color gamut
Apple decided to drop 3D Touch from iPhone XR, even though it was included with iPhone 8. iPhone XS models also have 3D Touch. This could have been a decision caused by the new edge-to-edge display technology.
The Verge does a good job of clipping the iPhone event down into a 12 minute parade, where these similarities and differences were highlighted by Apple during the launch event earlier in October.
It is expected the iPhone XR, with its matching internals and colorful options will provide a solid boost in iPhone sales, given the previous three years saw an exact form factor release from iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and 8. When the iPhone 8 was launched, the iPhone X offered the new form factor we see across all devices this year, but as the first $1,000 iPhone, it did not cause a massive shift…keeping Apple’s scale in mind.
iPhone XR represents this new form factor shift, with all the new colors, in the price point of the iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and 8. This causes Apple market analysts to assume a spike could be on its way.
iPhone XR will be available in-store, quantities dependent, on Friday, October 26, with pre-orders hitting Friday, October 19. As a side, some speculate this late October iPhone XR date is preventing or delaying another Apple event where new iPads, MacBooks, and a Mac mini.
