Perhaps you’re looking for something new and exciting for your smartphone. Maybe you’d like to try out the ZTE Axon M, a dual-screen foldable smartphone! Or you’re intrigued by the world’s first “AI smartphone,” the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

Huawei & ZTE Privacy

However, when you head to your mobile carrier’s website, you may have a hard time finding these phones listed. While AT&T had an agreement with Huawei to carry their newest flagship phone, the Mate 10 Pro, they pulled out of the deal last minute, reportedly due to pressure from United States intelligence agencies.

The heads of US intelligence agencies including the FBI, NSA and CIA have warned American consumers to not use products from Chinese smartphone manufacturers Huawei and ZTE. There are privacy concerns centered around the Chinese government, stating that the manufacturers provide the capacity to conduct undetected espionage.

Huawei responded saying that they are “trusted by governments and customers in 170 countries worldwide and poses no greater cyber-security risk than any ICT vendor.” ZTE stated that they are “committed to adhering to all applicable laws and regulations of the United States, work with carriers to pass strict testing protocols, and adhere to the highest business standards.”

While Huawei and ZTE can continue to sell their phones in the United States, they face major challenges without the help of the major carriers. More than 90% of Americans purchase their smartphones directly from their service providers. If you’re still wanting to get your hands on these new smartphones, you can find unlocked versions for sale at retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.

What Do You Think?

Should international smartphone manufacturers be more tightly monitored? Or should the US intelligence community provide public proof of their accusations? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
