[Video] Apple Announces iPhone XR, XS, XS Max and Apple Watch Series 4
Wednesday, September 12, Apple announced updates to the iPhone and Apple Watch lineups. As previously expected, the Cupertino based company spent two hours lavishly explaining the ‘beautiful’ upgrades to its biggest money maker devices. This year, the company provided three new, albeit just an iPhone X upgrade, flagship handset devices ranging from 5.8″ to 6.1″ and 6.5″. The Apple Watch even received a 35% screen increase. The YouTube community took to their cameras to explain the upgrades in the post-event hands-on arena.
iPhone XS & iPhone XS Max
Overall, the iPhone XS “5.8” is an exact form factor replica of last year’s iPhone X. Similar to other “S” year upgrades, the specs saw the only improvements. Contrasting, the iPhone XS Max, “because what’s bigger than ‘Plus,'” inquires Apple’s sr. vp. of worldwide marketing Phill Schiller, is a completely new form factor for the lineup. The iPhone XS Max clocks in with an impressively large 6.5″ OLED screen, the largest on any iPhone to date. A footprint just millimeters smaller than previous Plus sized devices gives way to a much larger screen given the edge-to-edge technology.
The device specs are equal across the entire board. Apple expects the iPhone XS Max will have a battery capacity of ~1.5 hours longer than the XS. Naturally, the larger device will have more internal space for a larger battery. Expect equivalent performance out of both devices when it comes to speed and power, which Apple generically claims is 30% better than last year.
iPhone XS and XS Max are on pre-order starting Friday, September 14 with availability on Friday, September 21. iPhone XS starts at $999 at 64GB. iPhone XS Max starts at $1,099, with the same entry storage capacity.
Another completely new model, the iPhone XR is sized between the XS and XS Max. This LCD screen with LED backlighting is 6.1″, but has slightly larger side bezels. The device is still considered to have an edge to edge display because the Touch ID is now gone, but LCD panels are not flexible. To ensure the LCD panel edges are hidden, the bezels were required to be slightly larger than the more expensive XS and XS Max models.
Color is back in a big way. iPhone offered colors like this on the iPhone 5c, which launched next to the 5s as a low cost plastic variant. The 5c was met with limited interest from the marketplace; however, that is not anticipated with the premium materials and impress specs included with the XR. XR is available in Coral, Blue, White, Black, Yellow, and (PRODUCT)RED.
The XR screen is the biggest weak spot, with a PPI rating similar to the iPhone 5, which is 326…still considered Retina. However, the XR goes point-by-point with the XS on all of the following:
12MP camera; 7MP TrueDepth front camera; FaceID (second generation); A12 Bionic chip; water resistance to at least 1M; wireless charging; entry level storage capacity; True Tone display; P3 color gamut; 625 cd/m3 max brightness; optical image stabilization; quad-LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync; Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control; Smart HDR photos; 4K video recording at 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps; …and on! Check out the full spec list on Apple’s comparison chart.
With all of these similarities, it is shocking the entry price is $749 for 64GB of storage. The device will pre-order on October 19, with availability on October 26.
Apple Watch Series 4
Apple Watch Series 4 is arguably the show stopper of all four new devices. With a 35% larger screen, the device has a more rounded form factor.
Impressively, the Series 4 is now the first ever over the counter, consumer level ECG reader. That means the Apple Watch is approved by the FDA, again a first, to take an official ECG of your heart rate, which can be shared with physicians. Other health related improvements include a slip, fall, and trip detection using the gyroscope and accelerometer. If Apple Watch detects such actions, the device will automatically call 911 if there is no subsequent movement within 60 seconds.
The device also comes in a new gold stainless colorway to match the new iPhone XS devices. Apple Watch Edition was also cancelled and no longer available for purchase in Series 4 or any previous generation.
Apple Watch 4 is available starting Friday, September 14, with availability Friday, September 21. Prices start at $399 for the 40MM version and $429 for 42MM.
