The New Galaxy S8 Brings the Infinity Screen, AI, and VR to Smartphones
The new Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus hit store shelves on April 21st, setting a new record for sales in South Korea and bringing with it a wealth of impressive new features. Unfortunately, the launch also caused some problems for the troubled tech giant — most notably regarding calibration.
A Sleek Design and Impressive Hardware Make the S8 a Success
Reviewers agree: the Samsung Galaxy S8’s technology is extremely impressive. The Galaxy S8 features a fresh new look with its “infinity screen””: a wrap around screen that has no left or right side bezel. The curve of this screen is what allows the S8 to have a full 5.8″ display (and the S8+ to have a full 6.2″ display) without feeling too large to be comfortably held.
Additional technology includes a 1.7 GHz (S8) or 2.3 GHz (S8+) quad octacore processor, full gear VR support, a 12 MP dual pixel camera, and the Bixby AI-driven personal assistant. In terms of modern hardware specifications, the Galaxy S8 is in the top tier of smartphone devices.
Not Without Some Minor Complications
Overall, there were only a couple of major issues with the launch. In South Korea, S8 phones were shipped improperly calibrated, so that the screens came out of the box with a bright red tint. Though the calibration could be manually adjusted by users at home, it can be difficult for users to calibrate a screen correctly without the appropriate tools. Reviewers also criticized the placement of the Galaxy S8’s fingerprint scanner as being too close to the camera for comfort.
Despite some rocky recent events, Samsung has a clear winner with the Galaxy S8. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is being critically acclaimed as attractive, versatile, and long-lasting. With high performance, a lengthy battery time, wireless charging, and water resistance, the Samsung Galaxy S8 offers all the features that modern users have come to expect and more. There are just a few bumps that still need to be ironed out.
